Description

This PreK-2 lesson kit includes a PDF script that prepares students for storytelling, instructional videos, and assessment guidelines for math and oral language. Mama Scatterbird is a first-time mama, and she’s nervous about keeping track of the eggs and the hatched chicks in her nest. The story’s voices, gestures, and facial expressions help kids learn about how quantities increase and decrease. Students explore part/part/whole relationship through child-centered humor and play.

You’ll follow your script and watch the videos to learn how to lead this arts integrated math lesson with your students. You’ll discover how to manipulate small toys and found objects to teach algebraic reasoning and the compensation patterns. And you’ll learn to help children draw story maps to demonstrate their understanding of number composition.

This Toy Story teaches part/part/whole and composition of number in Kindergarten. Increase the rigor of the story mapping and you’ll teach addition equations, number families, and algebraic compensation in 1st and 2nd grade. Lead this hilarious STEM story to your students and watch their algebraic reasoning soar!

<!–Learn the storyteller's craft of creating voices, facial expressions, and gestures that bring a story to life.
