Our youngest learners enjoy standing in “teacher position” and sharing what they see with the class.
With time, turn-taking, careful listening, and gentle teacher prompting, even young children can construct their own meaning of mathematical models.
About this Workshop
What do you See? Math Talks is a STEM program that introduces math terms to young children through pictures. Do you want to help all students — even our youngest learners, become active participants in their own learning? Are you looking to incorporate meaningful learning conversations into your math time?
This unique approach to Math Talks invites children to look at pictures, drawings, or models and simply describe what they see. “Student Teachers” take turns sharing what they see while the “Audience” carefully listens to identify math words. After the Audience identifies a math word, the teacher writes it in a Language of Math box. The teacher refers to the students’ words or sometimes adds a new word to the Language of Math box. Through listening to their peers and repeated turn-taking, young children master the meaning and usage of math vocabulary.
