Grouping Games for Teaching Addition and Subtraction

Description

This book features ten Grouping Games for teaching K-1 students addition and subtraction. Lessons include: Composition/Decomposition of Number, Addition with Fingers, Acting out Addition Stories, Subtraction with fingers, and Acting out Subtraction Stories.

Kids engage in active learning during Moving Through Math!  Students begin by learning to collaborate with others in small groups. Then children practice how to face the audience, make strong facial and body expressions, and stay focused! When they play these Grouping Games, Kindergarten and 1st grade students rehearse in small groups and then use their drama skills to act out math concepts. Together, the performers and the audience use the Language of Math to concisely explain the mathematics of the situation.

Each lesson has three different steps, providing the gradual release from whole group work, to small group work, to individual work. Whole group work is the active rehearsing and performing during Grouping Games. In small groups students extended their learning using math manipulatives. Finally, students draw and label pictures to build individual student portfolios.
