Grouping Games for Teaching Multiplication & Division

Description

This book features nine arts integrated Math Grouping Games for grade 3-5 students. Lessons include: Equal Groups; Repeated Addition; Multiplication; Dividing into Equal Groups; Dividing Equally Among Groups; Division with Remainders; and Order of Operations.

Students are active and engaged during Moving Through Math!  Children start by learning how to work with others in small groups. Then students learn how actors use facial expression, body expression, and focus to perform for an audience. When they play the Grouping Games, grade 3-5 students collaborate in small groups and use their drama skills to act out mathematical situations. Together, the performers and the audience use the Language of Math to concisely explain the math concepts represented in the performance.

Each lesson inlcudes three scaffolded steps, providing the gradual release from whole group work, to small group work, to individual work. Whole group work is the active learning during Grouping Games. In small groups students use math manipulatives to practice the Language of Math. Finally, students draw and label pictures to build individual student portfolios.
