TEACHER TRAININGTeaching the Music of Language BeBop Word Study: Chunking, Rhyming, and Vowel Swaps

Jazz singers play with chunking, rhyming, and vowel swapping when they scat sing in the BeBop style. Students use
these same strategies to decode words when they read!

Students delight in playing call-and-response chants that develop listening skills and
quick-response phoneme manipulation!

Students write and illustrate their own classroom BeBop books. All children enthusiastically read and re-read their own work!
This provides authentic and engaging fluency practice.

About this Workshop

In this Teaching the Music of Language: Bebop arts integration workshop, teachers discover how manipulating phonemes like jazz singers helps students improve their phoneme blending and reading fluency. Educators begin the training by exploring the relationship between phoneme manipulation, word study, and Be Bop scat singing. Then, learn to lead call-and-response chants that support word chunking, syllabication, and “finding the parts you know.” Next, practice musical call-and-response games that engage children in active listening and quick phoneme manipulation. Perform these musical games with rhyming word families and CVC vowel swap word families.

Finally, discover how author Chris Raschka played with these word manipulation techniques in his book, “Charlie Parker Played Be Bop.” And use “Charlie Parker” as a springboard for writing your own classroom Be Bop Word Study books. All children enthusiastically read and re-read their own books alone and with others! This provides authentic and engaging fluency practice.
